What if home was never about escaping the city, but rather about creating the right home with the right interior design to slow down?

After years of living in Beijing, a family made a life-changing decision — to leave behind their hectic city life and return to their roots. To build a home that grows with their family, with time, and with memory. Transforming a dilapidated old home.

In simple architectural form, this house designed by WJID Design blends into the countryside, as if growing naturally from the land. The facade echoes pink sunsets and red roofs, creating a warm, rustic feel.

“This is why we chose a red brick facade paired with pink exterior paint to complete the colour palette. It stems from our observation of the local colours — red bricks, red rooftops, and pink sunsets. We wanted to abstract and refine these environmental hues, creating a bold expression of the region’s colour identity,” explained Huang Quan from WJID Design.

“By using these low-saturation colours, the building both stands out from its environment and asserts its own presence.”

A unique entrance design creates a private transition space, making the return home a celebrated ritual. The moment you open the door, we want you to experience a landscape entirely different from the outside world.

“Along this homecoming path, it evokes the feeling of winding trails leading to secluded spots. Upon entry, the courtyard landscape unfolds. The concept of courtyard-building integration refers to a design philosophy where the courtyard and architecture merge. In this renovation, we followed the traditional northern courtyard layout. But a single courtyard wasn’t enough to meet our needs.”

“So for this building, we integrated the courtyard with the house, designing six distinct courtyards. Each courtyard is presented in a different way. All interior functions now revolve around these multiple courtyard-style spaces.”

Inside, the layout is interconnected, with inner courtyards distributed throughout the home. An open-plan living and dining area welcomes you with large floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors.

“The project is located near 39 degrees north latitude. Winter days are short, and the angle of sunlight is low, while summer sunlight is very intense. The south is our golden orientation for sunlight,” explained Liu Heng of WJID Design.

“Therefore, on the south-facing side fronting the courtyard, we used expansive glass doors and windows. We wanted to achieve a visual blending between the courtyard and the interior, maximising natural light to create a warm and comfortable atmosphere,” explained the designers.

“To provide better lighting and ventilation, we tucked smaller courtyards throughout the home. This allows you to feel the breath of the countryside and nature even while indoors, creating a wonderful dialogue.

I believe this captures the beautiful lifestyle the clients envisioned when moving from the city to the countryside.”

The interior colour scheme of neutral tones and wood contrasts with the exterior, creating a comfortable atmosphere. The dialogue between rough bricks and warm paint evokes memories of family and nature.

A high ceiling defines the dining area, with a feature light drawing the eye upwards. Framed around a central courtyard, the living spaces extend to an outdoor dining area and open yard designed for play.

“This is our central courtyard. The entire building follows a traditional courtyard style. What we wanted to create is a connection between people, nature, and the landscape — an indoor-outdoor interaction.”

“Moving past the dining area, we arrive at the western kitchen. For this project, we selected a fully integrated cabinetry system. This area is the Chinese kitchen, because we wanted every space — especially the kitchen — to have excellent light and ventilation. We added a door on the west side that opens directly into a landscaped west courtyard.”

The first floor is curated as a restful retreat, focused on healing and quiet moments. In certain parts of the second floor, we designed long, narrow horizontal windows. For the neighbours, we wanted to maintain transparency and light while screening out visual interference.

“We positioned the master bed to face the window view. To the right, we created a reading and writing nook, along with a lounge area. The path into the master bedroom leads through a walk-in closet designed with a dual-aisle layout.”

The daughter’s room was curated with soft, feminine shapes and a white palette accented with pastels. Designed with everyday wellness in mind, a gym overlooks lush greenery, inviting both movement and relaxation.

Sitting aside the main house, a separate building is dedicated to guests, allowing them to enjoy the space without passing through the home’s more private areas.

On the ground floor, a greenhouse overlooks the central courtyard with garden-facing windows, immersed in greenery.

“We wanted this to remain a permanent greenhouse. The roof is equipped with solar photovoltaic panels. Many spaces utilise this solar power, and we wanted the greenhouse to feel like spring all year round.”
