“A home is not a standardized entity. I hope for a home that exudes warmth. I desire this home to be personalized. Imagine, stepping into a home that feels like a tropical escape, right in the heart of the city,” explained Peng Zheng of C&C Design behind this villa design.

Effective space planning has completely transformed the way the family experiences the home — from this blank canvas to this.

In the city of Chengdu, China, this home sits sheltered by lush greenery. Designed by Peng Zheng of C&C Design, this home embraces the Chinese cultural belief that an ideal home is inseparable from a courtyard.

“For the Mei Dong De project, we aim to create a sense of relaxation and a vacation-like atmosphere. From the perspective of presentation, Eastern culture is not merely a symbol — it embodies a philosophy of human habitation. For example, the harmony between heaven and humanity, or living in a more natural manner. It represents a lifestyle,” the designer explained.

Blurring the indoor and outdoor boundaries has reshaped the relationship between the living room and the courtyard. The open plan living and dining area continues, seamlessly merging modern luxury style with subtle Moroccan elements.

While Moroccan interiors are known for their bold colours and rich jewel tones, this home takes a softer approach. With intricate patterns and organic textures combined with soothing colours, the space feels comfortable yet elegantly exotic.

“You can see this sofa — according to the original layout, such a large sofa wouldn’t fit. Moreover, we’ve designed the sofa to share seating with the dining table chairs, making it usable from both sides. My entire home can accommodate small gatherings of 8 to 10 people. This truly creates a social space.”

“Chinese traditionally avoid exposed beams in homes. After incorporating the balcony into the space, a cross beam appeared above the dining area. To address this, we used a flowing curved ceiling design to conceal it.”

Enveloping the beam, an organic shape ceiling adds depth and contrast to the home. This change makes the space feel modern, but warm and visually appealing at the same time.

“In Chengdu, Sichuan cuisine is known for its spiciness. So when stir frying or preparing hot pot ingredients, you can close this sliding door, completely sealing off the kitchen, keeping the cooking fumes contained within. Visually, it also serves as a beautiful backdrop, resembling a hotel setting.”

The parents’ room sits on the ground floor, with sliding doors that open to the beautiful garden. A simple room layout can be elevated with textured wallpapers and exotic furnishings.

“Notice how the staircase spirals around the elevator. The walls are finished with artistic paint, creating a relaxed vacation-like ambiance. The stairs lead to the first floor, with a spacious master bedroom and a guest room.”

“Here, we’ve transformed two rooms into a spacious master bedroom for the homeowners. Originally, there were three guest rooms. We’ve reconfigured it to have one large master bedroom and a smaller guest room. Placing the bed in the middle makes the room feel more open and more spacious. This uses space more efficiently while recreating a luxurious hotel feel.”

A long curved headboard anchors the floating bed. An extended headboard adds a custom look, creating a larger and more cohesive room. Extended headboards can be used for additional styling with lamps or art. A low wooden table creates another relaxing zone in the room. Together, these elements create a pleasing sanctuary, offering a peaceful retreat at the end of each day.

“For the wardrobe doors, we use rattan accents, adding a vacation-like feel. Interestingly, we also created a mini bar here. This way, when the couple is resting here, they can make tea in this area.”

The highlight of the master bathroom are the striking double sinks made of exquisite Dali stones punching through the countertops. Wooden blinds ensure natural light streams in while maintaining privacy. Due to the effective space planning of merging several rooms, a luxurious and spacious master bathroom is created.

On the second basement floor are spaces for relaxing and entertaining. A lounge in modern style is illuminated by screens that mimic light streaming through the sliding doors, transforming a typically dark basement space into a warmly lit interior.

Textured walls cocoon the bar space in an organic and natural atmosphere. Beside it is a calming tea room. The double volume skylight draws sunlight in, nourishing the growing tree. The choice of low furniture and a sunken tatami style creates a bigger impression of space. Accenting the warm wooden space with black furniture adds a modern touch.

“If there are several children in the family, or if relatives’ children or their classmates come over, they may not want to stay with the adults, but would prefer to have their own exclusive space. Therefore, we utilize the mezzanine to create a special area for the children.”

On the first basement floor, an entire playroom is dedicated to a racing tabletop game. A small hall sits alongside the playroom, on the same floor overlooking the tea room. Round sofas complete this cozy gaming space.

Instead of using the double volume space to create another room, the space is left as a void. Homeowners often try to squeeze more rooms into the layout without thinking about their purpose or need. If you prioritise how a space feels and flows instead, it can totally transform a home.

This home is more than just a space — it’s a reflection of culture and connection. Every texture and curve tells a story about a sanctuary that nurtures and inspires the family it was created for.
