So what makes a home feel complete? Is it the way light moves through a space or how spaces flow seamlessly? This home was designed around the idea of seamless continuity.
Every curve, texture and material here comes together, crafting a sense of calm and belonging.
Today on Design Seed, we’re going to share with you a five storey home surrounded by immersive tropical views, an unblocked view of a city golf course, and well curated landscape surrounding your own private swimming pool.
From the moment you arrive, you’ll notice how the home is designed to open up to nature, and at the very top, the view stretches out across an expansive golf course with a backdrop view of the Hainan shores.
Nestled in Hainan, this home is a unique blend of tropical and tranquil.
Tan Chung Han, the designer of this home from Design Apartment explained, “Because our current location it belongs to a very tropical a very relaxing place. So we created a theme around the sea sets the main axis of the entire design.”
The moment you step inside this home, you’re greeted by this beautiful sculptural staircase. Its curved and fluid form anchors the entire home.
“The main axis of the whole design we started out as a sculptural staircase. Then as soon as you walk in we will see a very sculptural artistic handrail for a staircase through our entire space. I hope we can say that through a central axis from the sculptural feel of a staircase. When you’re moving, your pace, your mood, your thinking, there will also be a different precipitation and change,” Tan explains.
Tan explains, “After entering the space we walk towards each other. What we see is what’s outside. An infinity pool connecting to our living room and common area.”
The living area seamlessly extends to a poolside dining space, complete with an outdoor pavilion and bar.
Tan said, “This time for this design we have curated something special, I think an interesting pool. What about this pool? It passes through an acrylic surface. This allows the water surface to appear more a more translucent and penetrative visual effect. A detail like this integrates with the entire built environment. Then it becomes elements that echo with the overall design.”
The living room is designed to dissolve the boundary between inside and out. When these full height folding doors are open, the space transforms into something else entirely.
Tan explained, “And then through a relationship like this we also treat the ground and material to create cohesiveness. This allows the flooring materials to create reflections on the ground. Including our treatment of the ceiling, you can see our ceiling. A lot of wooden structures were also incorporated following the balcony and building’s original structure to create a coherent visual effect.”
Tan explained, “On the surface itself we can see a lot this kind of textural and organic variation. At the same time, it also connects with the overall very natural and pleasant environment. I hope they can be integrated together.”
The dry kitchen stands in bold black contrast. More than just a colour choice, this is a thoughtful visual pause that adds depth.
Tan explained, “So this rhythm of light and heavy in the layout I also hope that it will allow us to defines the spatial experience. With our furnishings the two gradually align with each other, aligning their rhythm. Then let the space integration can be stronger.”
From the sculptural staircase to the open lounge and pool, this entire ground floor was designed as one continuous story, crafted to make you feel connected to the people around you and to nature just outside.
“Because actually in space in the middle of a design process the attention to details is very important. Like our elevator entrance, we can soften the boundaries of the built form, create a lot of different details. A real mansion actually doesn’t need too many expensive brands or materials. I think it’s about the mastery of details it can be conveyed, guide our gaze, our senses. Only in this way can we create and have such a well-designed space and its corresponding relationship,” Tan explained.
Moving upstairs, the first floor opens into a bright open plan lounge and dining area, where a double volume ceiling draws your eyes upwards.
Tan explained, “Then on the second floor we created a family hall. There is also a dining area. With one of the spaces as a private living room and a double volume area that we hope can create spatial change, allow you to experience diversity in the space. Variability makes you feel like it is a three-dimensional spatial structure rather than simply flat layers.”
“Part of the second floor we also designed a very good buffer zone, created a bedroom, a dining area and central kitchen. And this is where the family gets together,” Tan explained.
Here, simplicity takes center stage, slowing you down and drawing you in. In open plan spaces like these, lighting plays a key role in defining zones. The recessed lighting design gently frames the dining area.
Step outside and the balcony unfolds into a scenic bar, perfect for slow evenings where the view takes center stage.
On the third floor, the master bedroom features a floating bed layout that evokes a sense of openness and calm.
“The master bedroom part we made a curved shape, a detail for the headboard. Then the bed directly faces the sea. So when we wake up in the morning you can feel a visual openness. On the left is the entry to the walk-in wardrobe. As for the walk-in wardrobe we enter through two large sliding doors. The division of these two sliding doors is similar to a structurally designed wooden divider. Then formed a very classical and very modern impression of the space,” said Tan.
Sliding wooden doors reveal the master bathroom, a space that balances elegance with ease, designed for slow mornings.
Tan explained, “Once our functional requirements are met the overall spatial continuity, including our living room and the master bedroom and its relationship with the master bathroom, it can form a very good connection.”
On the same floor a private study sits furnished in the consistent minimalist palette of white and wooden tones.
The room on the first floor features a practical and compact room, while another on the second floor has a playful vibe.
On the second floor, a large bedroom opens to sweeping views of the golf course. Minimalist yet warm, it features a seamless built in wooden wardrobe with a desk, a smart space saving detail. The adjoining bathroom keeps a white minimalist palette with black accents.
Topping the home is a warm rooftop deck featuring an inviting outdoor and dining lounge, a perfect spot for drinks and relaxation in the evening.
Tan explains, “But why do so many people like villas? I think the most unique thing about the villa is it can satisfy your imagination of life, passion for life, because it has land and sea. There is an outdoor pool. Normally, this is more difficult to achieve.”
As this home draws to a close, its story lingers — a story of light, flow, and connection. This is the quiet beauty of thoughtful design.
